Every day, three billion gallons of water flow through showerheads in the United States alone. The majority of these showerheads emit twice the water that’s necessary for a thorough, enjoyable shower. In addition, 80% of people multi-task after turning the shower on but before entering, wasting more than 2.5 gallons of water per minute down the drain, in our quest for the perfect water temperature.
We tap lakes, build dams and reservoirs, and construct processing plants to produce clean water. By using more than we need, we overload sewer and septic systems and leach fields. In order to ensure that those who need water—both in-stream and out-of-stream—will have access to the resource for generations to come, participating utilities are offering free Low Flow showerheads. These showerheads use the latest conservation techniques to reduce water use while still providing a satisfying shower.
Early Low Fow showerheads simply blocked some of the water flow. Although it saved water, this solution took the joy out of showering beneath a robust blast of water. Manufacturers have improved these products by engineering the movement of water, sending it through special orifices that control droplet size, focus the stream, and, in some cases, increase the blast by mixing in air to create turbulence or pulsing. Some advanced showerheads, like Evolve’s Road Runner, utilize the unique ShowerStart™ technology which allows you to continue multitasking without wasting water. ShowerStart stops the flow of water to a trickle when the water reaches a comfortable 95 degrees. This way your hot water is no longer running down the drain while you are away from the shower. The ShowerStart also makes it easier to take a ‘Navy shower’ by setting the water to a trickle while you lather and shampoo.
